Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), a leading developer of sustainable energy solutions, and part of Jameel Energy, continues to strengthen its portfolio in Italy with the development of more than 2,900 MW (11,000 MWh) of battery energy storage systems (BESS), which are expected to reach “Ready to Build” status between 2026 and 2029.
The entire portfolio, currently at an advanced stage of development, is strategically distributed across the regions of Sicilia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Puglia, Toscana, Marche, Campania, Molise, Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna and Sardegna, contributing to reinforcing and diversifying the energy security of the Italian electricity system.
Sicily, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Puglia account for the largest share of projects and installed capacity, underscoring the company’s commitment to supporting key regions in the country’s energy transition. Sicily alone is expected to host five projects totaling 745 MW, followed by Friuli-Venezia Giulia with three projects adding 663 MW, and Puglia with four projects reaching 445 MW.
The remaining 966 MW will be distributed across several other regions, including Molise (242 MW), Lombardia (201 MW), Marche (175 MW), Toscana (146 MW), Emilia-Romagna (96 MW), Campania (58 MW) and Sardegna (48 MW).
Together, these projects are expected to support grid stability, increase operational flexibility, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the system. In this context, the planned deployment of stand-alone BESS projects not only addresses these challenges but also underscores the key role of storage in the country’s decarbonization process. It also furthers FRV’s position as a global pioneer in this type of solution, with proven experience in development, construction and operation of storage projects across markets such as Australia, Chile, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Finland. FRV has more than 15 years of experience developing renewable energy projects in Italy.
