Launching of the Jameel Observatory

• Jameel Observatory for Food Security Early Action: a centre of excellence in Nairobi, Kenya that is harnessing technology and data to address the impact of climate change on hunger.

• The Jameel Observatory is a partnership between the University of Edinburgh, the International Livestock Research Institute, Save the Children, the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at MIT and Community Jameel.

• Initially tackling food insecurity among pastoralists and farmers in Kenya and Somalia, our aim is to build a global network and community of practice.

• The Jameel Observatory is one of a number of major initiatives launched to mark our family’s 75th anniversary of business and philanthropy.

The Jameel Observatory combines the local knowledge and concerns of communities facing on-the-ground threats of hunger with innovations in data science and humanitarian action; teaming up to devise solutions that can predict, prepare for and overcome climate-related food security and malnutrition challenges in dryland areas.

Launching in Kenya and partnering initially with communities in East Africa, our global community of practice unites data, science and practice for food-secure and resilient lives and livelihoods in drylands worldwide.

Based at the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, Kenya, we are an international partnership led by the University of Edinburgh collaborating with the International Livestock Research Institute, Save the Children, the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and Community Jameel.
